I have officially entered the Depths of my Nihilism and yes, thank you, it is exhausting, but I saw someone on LinkedIn the other day (wow that was a depressing thing to type) suggesting that Medium was a good way to both spread one’s ~ ideas ~ and also make a little bit of side money. And reader, I straight-up chortled. Because for those of us who are so old that we wore JNCOs the first time around, this is, well, a chortle-able notion.
The internet moves pretty fast in these days of TikTok and cut-rate prices at Crazy Donny’s Used Tesla and Soiled Trousers lot on the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Ketamine Enema Alley, it’s easy to forget how things used to be even just 10 or 15 years ago. But before “influencer” was a job and everyone had pivoted to video (sorry, I should’ve included a TW on that last piece of text), being a freelance writer was a viable profession that some of us managed to do with some degree of success.
Like, I actually paid off my student loans and bought a car without a full-time employer. I just wrote a lot of articles and did other things (like worked for companies as a social media consultant and ran communications for political campaigns and other thinky things like that) and it ruled. I didn’t have a boss. I worked remotely…
